Treasury has been called upon to ensure funds are allocated on time to ensure the completion of the 635 cubic meter Gwayi Shangani dam.

Construction of the dam began in 2012 before the contractor, China Water and Electric Corporation stopped operations in 2013.

The recent availing of US$5 million has however seen the resumption of operations at the dam and the money is expected to be exhausted in less than a month.

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA), however, said what is worrisome is that stoppages on the dam, which will be the largest water body in Matabeleland North Province, entails costly replication of work costing millions of dollars.

ZINWA Design and Construction Manager, Engineer Taurayi Maurikira said this year alone US$37 million has been availed for outstanding work.

The Gwayi Shangani project, expected to ease Bulawayo's water problems, is a major component of the Matabeleland Zambezi national water project and will be the country's third largest water reservoir after Tokwe Mukosi and Lake Mutirikwi.

Currently, US$110 million is required to complete construction of the dam.
