Following widespread concerns over the rising of the heinous crime of sexual violence or rape, the cabinet has resolved to come up with more deterrent measures to stamp out the crime.
In a statement, the Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Dr Chris Mushowe said accordingly, the government has resolved that a sentence of 60 years of imprisonment be imposed for cases of rape of minors of 12 years and below and disabled.
Minister Mushowe said this is in line with principles on the proposed amendments to the Criminal Law–Codification and Reform Act –chapter 9:33: minimum mandatory sentencing for rape.
Dr Mushowe also said the government has resolved that a sentence of 40 years imprisonment be imposed for the rest of the cases of rape or sodomy.
He said these drastic measures have become necessary as a means to protect society against perpetrators of this inhuman crime.
