The scramble for land has caused heartaches for many Zimbabweans who have sacrificed their hard earned money for pieces of land only to realise later they have fallen prey to land barons.

However, the plight of the desperate home seekers and those who have sought to line their pockets has since come to the attention of government which has pledged to end the vice once and for all.

Housing is a basic human need and many Zimbabweans, feeling the need to have shelter have in the process thrown caution to the wind and at the end of the day have been done by individuals who preyed on their desperation.

Government said a no nonsense approach to the issue of individuals who have sought personal enrichment at the expense of desperate home seekers must now be a thing of the past.

The Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere who was speaking on the sidelines of a ceremony to celebrate the appointment of Councillor Samuel Chinyowa in the capital said government cannot stand by as individuals bent on fleecing desperate home seekers go scot free.

Harare has been the epicentre of such invasions and the city has been left with no option but to sanitise many of the settlements which in many instances are cited in undesignated areas.

Efforts at sanitising the chaos that had been caused by land barons is best epitomised through Caledonia which now resembles a planned settlement through the efforts of the Urban Development Corporation.
