A Mberengwa man, Amend Nyaya (36) collapsed and lost consciousness after coming into close contact with a "goblin" while herding cattle. The "goblin" which was reportedly wearing a red cloth and looked like a rabbit asked Nyaya to take it to the village.

Deputy Officer Commanding Police Zvishavane and Mberengwa districts Superintendent Robert Mugazambi confirmed receiving a report about the incident, which occurred at the weekend.

Sources said Mr Nyaya only gained consciousness after a local faith healer, only identified as Madzibaba Benjamin, had been called to perform some rituals.

"What caused the incident to be strange and be the talk of the community is that when Mr Nyaya collapsed after encountering the goblin, it is the goblin that shouted for help. Mr Nyaya was alone when he collapsed. However, when villagers rushed to the scene responding to the cry for help, they discovered the goblin and an unconscious Mr Nyaya. This became apparent that the voice they heard was from the goblin," said a witness, Mr Justice Ndlovu.

Mr Ndlovu said when the villagers got to the scene Mr Nyaya was lying helplessly on the ground while the suspected goblin, which looked more like a rabbit, was just by his side.

He said the villagers quickly reported the matter to Chief Bvute who quickly brought a local faith healer in his vehicle to the scene.

"After conducting some rituals, Mr Nyaya then regained consciousness and this was when a police report was made at Mberengwa District Police Station," said Mr Ndlovu.

Supt Mugazambi said police who attended to the scene witnessed a creature that looked like a rabbit at the scene where Mr Nyaya had collapsed.

"The creature was said to have been wearing a smart red garment. This prompted the villagers to strongly suspect that the creature could have been a goblin," he said.

Supt Mugazambi said the "goblin" was then put on fire and burnt in front of villagers and Chief Bvute after some rituals were conducted at the scene.

"Chief Bvute attended the ritual ceremony and the subsequent burning of the creature. Police are investigating the matter. The chief is also doing his investigations because there is now a lot of finger pointing among villagers following the incident," he said.
