Businessman demands $33,000 from Chombo over dog bite

GOKWE businessman, Orene Rukwana, has filed a $33 210 lawsuit against Home Affairs minister Ignatius Chombo after he was allegedly bitten by a police dog, which was unleashed by a law enforcement agent on him at an Oliver Mtukudzi show in the Midlands centre on July 8 this year.
In a letter dated July 12, and addressed to Chombo, Rukwava, who is represented by Mackenzie Ndebele of Zvinavakobvu Law Chambers, said Constable Fazibo Nkosana of Gokwe Central Police dog section unleashed the animal on him to prevent him from entering the show, causing him serious injuries.
The letter was copied to Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri, officer commanding Midlands province, officer commanding Gokwe district and the officer-in-charge Gokwe Central Police Station.
"Our client is a business and family person in Gokwe and the incident caused by the unprofessional, overzealous and reckless conduct of the police officer caused him great embarrassment," part of the letter read.
"Consequently, our client suffered damages for medical care and hiring of a driver and aide, as he was unable to drive and walk properly for days.
"We are instructed to demand, as we, hereby, do, payment of $33 210 in damages of the following; medical expenses ($2 500 actual and anticipated), damaged clothing ($250), shock, pain and suffering ($15 000), hiring of driver ($560) and contumelia ($15 000)."
Officials from the Home Affairs ministry acknowledged receipt of the demand and said they were looking into the matter.
A letter dated July 21, and signed by a TR Mutendi of the Civil Division, read: "We acknowledge receipt of your letter dated July 12, 2017, the contents of which have been noted.
"Please be advised that the matter is receiving attention and we will revert to yourselves in due course."
