AT least 10 kombi drivers and conductors were arrested and detained at Kwekwe Central Police Station after they pulled off the road and parked their vehicles at the Zanu-PF district offices on Wednesday in protest over traffic police officers' alleged extortionist behaviour.

The kombi crews were arrested after they allegedly turned violent and assaulted police officers.

Their lawyer, Liberty Mashanyare on Thursday said his clients had yet been formally charged.

"I can confirm that my clients are being held following demonstrations yesterday (Wednesday)," he said.

"The police have not yet charged them formally and, therefore, I am unsure which charges they will be facing," he said.

Thousands of commuters were left stranded after commuter omnibus operators pulled off the road in protest over the heavy traffic spot fines demanded by the police.

Kwekwe mayor, Matenda Madzoke said he was engaging both the police and kombi owners to ensure that service is restored and violence stopped.

"I hear that the kombi guys were now attacking commuters, who were looking for alternative transport and that cannot be allowed. They have grievances with the police they should address them with the police," he said.
