Mugabe flies to Ethiopia for AU Summit

President Robert Mugabe has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he will attend the 18th summit of the African Union.

President Mugabe will be among other heads of state and government who will attent the summit.

The summit will see the election of a new chairperson for the AU Commission where the incumbent Jean Ping will battle it out with South Africa's Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

There will also be elections to choose other commissioners of the AU Commission.

SADC Chairperson, South African President, Jacob Zuma is expected to brief the AU on progress made in Zimbabwe on the issue of elections.

Zanu PF has reiterated that elections will be held this year with or without the new constitution, while MDC formations are not in favour of the idea.

Economic fortunes of Africa will also be topical during the summit.

President Mugabe was seen off at the Harare International Airport by Vice President Joice Mujuru, cabinet ministers, senior government officials and service chiefs.

Meanwhile, Joice Mujuru is the Acting President.
