FIVE Chinese men who secured employment at mobile phone operator Econet Wireless after entering Zimbabwe as holiday makers are facing deportation.

They were arrested and fined for contravening the Immigration Act.

Chen Caijan (45), Peng Erming (37), Zhang Hong Yuan (42), Shi Jiahua (38) and Lui Guibin (37) were last week fined US$300 each by Masvingo magistrate Mr Patrick Mapiye after they were convicted of contravening the Immigration Act. Mr Mapiye remanded them in custody pending their deportation by the Immigration Department after they violated the provisions of their 60-day visitors' permit.

Charges against the five arose on December 23 last year when they were issued with permits to stay in Zimbabwe as tourists.

But they secured employment with Econet ZTE Corporation as engineers and were posted to Mbuyanehanda Village in Bikita where they were working on an Econet booster.

Word got to the Immigration Office that there were some Chinese nationals who were working for Econet in Bikita without the requisite papers.
