A call has been made for traditional leaders to perform a cleansing ceremony at Lake Chivero where many people have lost their lives, Zbc News reported on Sunday.

Chief Chimbamauro of Zvimba East made the call in Harare at the memorial service for four of the Chivero Boat Disaster victims from the January and Kaseke families.

The Lake Chivero disaster touched the hearts of so many.

Images of the bodies of the drowning victims continue to flash across many minds and the families of the victims are still to come to terms with the tragedy almost a month after the horrific accident.

Chief Chimbamauro was part of those who joined the January and Kaseke families at memorial services to remember the lives of the four children who could have been alive if the boat crew had taken all the safety precautions.

He disclosed that traditionally when such accidents continue to occur, elders of the affected area should perform rituals to cleanse the black spot.

Ms Mary January who lost four family members in the tragedy is still to come to terms with the death of her children and nieces and she says she is heartbroken.

Ms Agnes January and Tobias Kaseke, parents to Sprena and Anesu Kaseke, say life will never be the same again without their children.

Relatives who were at the memorial service said only God has the answers to why such a cruel fate occurred adding that they will never forget the day.

Tragedy hit revelers at Lake Chivero on Christmas Day after a boat capsized drowning 11 people.

Owner of Chasura Boats, Latif Ameer (53), boat captain Fadil Ramon Weale (27) and mechanic-cum driver Enock Yorani Zulu (36) were arrested and were granted bail.
