Zimbabwe on Thursday announced it was banning meat imports from South Africa with immediate effect.
The move came after an outbreak of Rift Valley Fever in the Eastern Cape.
The acting director for the government's livestock and veterinary services department said the ban is only temporary.
William Shereni said they are consulting closely with authorities in South Africa on how to minimise the effects of the Rift Valley Fever outbreak.
The ban comes less than a month after Zimbabwe prohibited some chicken imports after the frozen chicken scandal.
Local producers welcomed the ban.
Zimbabwean meat and chicken products tend to be more expensive than imported goods. Local producers say they have to meet high overheads.
