AN attempt to stop two Chipinge men from fighting over opaque beer at a beer binge cost the life of a 48-year-old man after he was stabbed to death last week.

Liberty Dube of Chiso Village in Chief Musikavanhu's area was pronounced dead upon arrival at St Peter's Mission Hospital after sustaining serious chest injuries.

Police said Givemore Munhungeyi (25) of Ndapingwa Village and Douglas Mechisi (24) of the same village allegedly teamed up to stab Dube before they vanished.

Munhungeyi was later arrested and is assisting police with investigations, but Mechisi is still at large.

"We urge people to solve disputes amicably than resorting to violence. We will not hesitate to bring to book perpetrators who take the law into their hands. We have since launched a manhunt to bring to book the alleged perpetrator," said acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda.

Dube was drinking traditional beer with other villagers who included Munhungeyi, Clayton Maraire and Temba Mberengwa on August 15 at one Zegoriasi's homestead when the incident happened.  "A misunderstanding arose between Mberengwa and Maraire resulting in a fist fight. Dube tried to stop the duo.

"This did not go down well with Munhungeyi who tripped Dube to the ground. Mechisi produced a knife and allegedly stabbed Dube in the chest. He bled profusely.

"They ran away. Dube's wife, Violet, was alerted and rushed to the scene. Dube was taken to Gumira Clinic before he was transferred to St Peter's Mission Hospital where he died upon admission," he said.

Asst Insp Chananda appealed to members of the public with information leading to Mechisi's arrest to contact their nearest police station.

In an unrelated incident, a 40-year-old man from Chipinge last week hanged himself over an undisclosed reason.

The body of Tazviona Batsirai of Gwama Village in Chief Mutema's area was found hanging from a tree branch.

Asst Insp Chananda said they were yet to ascertain the motive behind Batsirai's suicide.
