A-38-year-old Fort Rixon man in Insiza District, Matabeleland South, allegedly burnt his colleague's property worth more than $3 000 following a misunderstanding at a bottle store.

The man, Elijah Ndlovu of Village 2, Pioneer, Fort Rixon followed Mr Dumisani Mguni of the same village to his homestead and allegedly set fire to Mr Mguni's bedroom hut while he was bathing.

Ndlovu appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Ms Rachel Mukanga on charges of malicious damage to property last week.

He denied the charges levelled against him and Ms Mukanga remanded him in custody to 4 September for trial.

For the State, Mr Nkathazo Dlodlo told the court that on 17 August 2017 at Pioneer Village 2, Fort Rixon at about 7pm, Ndlovu and Mr Mguni had a misunderstanding at a bottle store.

Mr Mguni then went to his homestead and Ndlovu followed him and set ablaze his bedroom hut while he was bathing. After the act, Ndlovu ran away and was seen by Mr Mguni's child who was in the kitchen.

Mr Mguni only managed to remove his three other children who were sleeping inside the hut but property valued at $3 379 was burnt to ashes. The matter was reported to the police leading to Ndlovu's arrest.
