VICE President Joice Mujuru has reportedly recruited Zanu PF old guard member Rugare Gumbo to "move and shake" things for her in the Midlands province as part of her plot to topple Emerson Mnangagwa in the getting fiery Zanu PF succession race, party sources have said.
This comes amid revelations that Gumbo has off late been seen going around decampaigning Mnangagwa in the province and claiming that he is a senior to the latter in party structures.
Mnangagwa is the Zanu PF secretary for legal affairs and defence minister. He (Mnangagwa) and Mujuru are said to be leading two camps that seek to take power in the post President Robert Mugabe era.
President Mugabe turns 88 on February 21 and is of foul health as evidenced by his regular visits to Asian countries to seek treatments for various ailments.
"Rugare Gumbo says he is a senior to Cde ED (Mnangagwa) and goes around showing off his appointment to the portfolio of information and publicity in the Zanu PF politburo.
"Last year a war of words broke out in the Zanu PF Midlands provincial executive when he (Gumbo) was openly denounced by the people in favour of Mdara ED, this was after he got some gifts from VP Mujuru" said a source.
The source added that Mai Mujuru as VP Mujuru is affectionately called erred grossly by recruiting Gumbo because he is an untrustworthy party member who has a history of "treacherous conduct" that makes VP Mujuru chances of winning any sympathy from the province next to zero.
"Gumbo does not deserve to be anything on behalf of anyone. It's a blunder for the Mujuru camp. The man cannot be senior than Ngwena (as Mnangagwa is affectionately called in political cycles) or anyone because in Zanu PF.
"No sell-out can be trusted in Zanu PF. Rugare Gumbo sold out during the war and put at risk the lives of our liberators," said the party insider.
Records show that Gumbo was once arrested prosecuted and convicted for attempting to dethrone President Mugabe prior to 1980.
"When Rugare came back from Mozambique after being released from prison curtsy of aid from the Internal Red Cross Society, he contested elections though a Zanu Ndonga ticket and therefore he has no credibility to speak on behalf of the party, latter alone lead any party structure," added the livid source.
Gumbo has lost every party and or parliamentary election he has ran for in the past. Presently he is campaigning for a senatorial seat in Mberengwa and has been accused of sowing divisions amongst Zanu PF party structures.
The battle to take over Mugabe's post has reached fever pitch with reports that in every province of Zimbabwe the two main camps, led by Mnangagwa and Mujuru respectively have upped their game.
However the Mnangagwa camp seems to be gaining more ground.
