Mobile registration starts as Mudede warns those with old ID cards will not vote

A mobile vote registration exercise for Zimbabwean citizens kicks off next Monday the 4th of September but registrar general Tobaiwa Mudede warned that those with old identity cards will not be allowed to vote.
In a media briefing in the capital this morning, Mudede said the exercise entails the issuing out of birth and death certificates as well as national identity cards.
The exercise will last until the 30th of November 2017 and is in preparation for the 2018 harmonised elections.
RG Mudede said the registration exercise will be carried out in all provinces of the country and will enable citizens to acquire birth and death certificates and identity cards as well as verify their papers if the ones they have already are machine readable.
If not they will be able to replace them well in time for the harmonised elections. Mudede said the old metal identity cards will not be accepted for voting as they are not machine readable and those will need to be replaced with the machine readable identity cards.
The RG urged Zimbabweans to take advantage of the mobile registration exercise and obtain birth certificates and identity documents or correct errors on their documents so that they will be able to register to vote and participate in the coming elections.
RG Mudede warned those who may want to take part in the voting processes using counterfeit documents that they will be caught and will be prosecuted.
He also confirmed that aliens are excluded from voting in the country's elections.
