A man from Nkayi, Thembani Moyo reportedly committed suicide after being ditched by his lover whom he was preparing to marry.
Moyo, from Mavolontiya Village under Chief Sivalo had been dating Zanele Tshabangu, who for six years had been allegedly receiving serious beatings from him.
Considering the time they had spent together, Moyo decided to pay lobola for Tshabangu. The lovers agreed and Moyo was working on raising the required money.
However, Tshabangu began counting the hurtful moments she had spent with Moyo and decided to chicken out.
Instead of the usual fury whereby he would beat up his girlfriend, Moyo took a rope and went to the bush to end his life when Tshabangu called time on them.
"The two have been in love for the past six years and their love life was at an advanced stage. Moyo was running around organising money to pay the bride price to her family," said a police source.
Tshabangu told B Metro that she suffered a lot when she dated the deceased.
"We were in love for the past six years but it was a rough journey. He used to accuse me of seeing other men and also beat me up. I decided to cut ties with him. I was shocked to hear that he hung himself from a tree," she said.
Chief Sivalo who attended Moyo's funeral confirmed the issue and also said the matter was reported to the police.
Efforts to get a comment from Matabeleland North police spokesperson Siphiwe Makonese were fruitless.
