Zim's Constitution Committee fails to meet constitution target

The Constitution Select Committee has once again failed to meet its set target for the completion of the drafting stage and at the moment has only managed to review less than half of the completed 18 chapters.

The completion of the new constitution remains a far fetched dream as the process keeps going back and forth between the technical committee and the drafters.

The drafting stage was earmarked to have been completed by the 30th of January, but a few days after the set date, the technical committee has only reviewed four of the completed 18 chapters.

Copac Co-chairperson, Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana said they are in the process of reviewing the draft proposals and said probably by next week they would have finished going through the remaining chapters.

Mangwana also mentioned that the Copac management committee which met earlier this week, addressed other issues but did not come up with a clear position on crucial issues pertaining to the death penalty, dual citizenship, the Attorney General as well as provincial governors.

With the tortoise pace at which the constitution making process is progressing, analysts feel there is more to the slow pace than meets the eye.
