CONTROVERSIAL Esigodini gold miner Baron Dube is languishing in remand prison following his arrest on allegations of shooting two men believed to be part of a nine-member gang armed with axes, machetes, spears and knives that allegedly attempted to kill him.
Dube (42) from Habane Township who is now facing two counts of attempted murder relating to an incident where he allegedly shot Nyasha Nkiwane and Thulani Ndebele on Tuesday appeared before Esigodini resident magistrate Mr Tawanda Muchemwa who remanded him in custody to 15 September.
Dube, who was not asked to plead was, however, advised to apply for bail at the High Court.
This was after the State, represented by prosecutor Mr Acumen Khuphe, opposed his initial application after taking into consideration submissions by the investigations officer that investigations were still in progress and that the accused was likely to interfere with State witnesses since he was an influential person.
It was also stated that the community was not happy with his conduct such that he would end up committing another offence similar to the one he is facing.
The court is yet to prove that on the day in question and at around 9pm the complainants who were at Dube's Sharks Sports Bar reportedly got involved in an argument with him (Dube) over a yet to be disclosed reason.
It is reported that at the height of the argument, Nkiwane and Ndebele, who were aided by their accomplices and armed with axes charged at Dube who then drew his pistol and fired two shots into the air trying to scare them but they refused to back off.
It is alleged that when Dube realised that the gang would not back off, he shot Nkiwane and Ndebele.
Nkiwane, who is believed to be one of the ring leaders of a notorious gang of gold panners, was shot on the left thigh while another bullet grazed him on the right shoulder while Ndebele was also shot on the side of the left thigh.
The matter was reported to the police leading to Dube's arrest.
Last year Dube appeared before the same magistrate facing charges of allegedly instructing a gang of gold panners to attack a rival group in Filabusi with machetes and catapults.
