No salary increase for civil servants since dollarisation

MDC-T deputy secretary general Tapiwa Mashakada has bemoaned the failure by the government to increase civil servants salaries since the dollarisation of the economy after the hyper inflation period.
"My country was the only State in Africa using United States Dollars out of a multi-currency basket after the collapse of our domestic currency in 2008. But since 2009 civil servants have had very little or no salary increase. This is not normal.
"It is only in Zimbabwe where civil servants can go for almost 8 years without an increase," he said.
He went on to say: "Theoretically the consumer price index is increasing negatively hence inflation is negligible. Yet the actual prices of basic goods in the shops have been rising steadily. Is this not a contradiction.
"The other contradiction is that a surrogate currency called Bond notes was introduced last year.
"Its value is pegged at the same level with the US dollar yet it cannot be used outside Zimbabwe's borders in cash form but can be used used outside Zimbabwe via debit cards on point of sale machines or ATMs.
"With low export earnings a foreign exchange crisis is looming. When are the people going to wake up and smell the coffee?"
