A gang of about 20 men terrorised residents in Bulawayo's Pumula South last Sunday, smashing window panes and assaulting anyone they met along the way in as yet unclear circumstances.

Residents who spoke to The Standard People said they had since reported the matter to the police.

About four houses were attacked by the thugs on the day at around 2am.

John Mangena, one of the victims, said the gang pounced on his house at 2:20 am throwing stones and breaking three window panes in the process. At least three stones landed inside his house, he said.

Another resident who preferred to be identified only as Ncube said it appeared the thugs knew him as they shouted his names during the attack.

Bulawayo police spokesperson inspector Precious Simango confirmed receiving reports of the attack but said it was just a group of mischievous youths.

"There were young boys who were going around making noise outside residents' gates and attacking people," she said.

The residents asked police to increase night patrols and they have also activated their own neighbourhood watch teams
