TEN people â€" most of them thought to be Zimbabweans â€" were confirmed dead on Tuesday after a minibus crashed head-on with a heavy goods truck in South Africa's Limpopo Province.

Police spokesman Captain Maano Sadike said the dead included eight men, one woman and a small boy.

Fifteen others were injured.

Most of the injured were taken to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital. Three of them were taken to Elin Hospital in Makhado.

Captain Sadike said the crash on the N1 motorway at Bandelierkop near Makhado â€" about 93km from Beitbridge â€" halted traffic for close to four hours. The N1 Road links Zimbabwe and South Africa.

From witness statements, police believe the truck â€" which was heading towards Johannesburg â€" veered into the oncoming traffic and collided with the Zimbabwe-bound minibus.

"We have opened a case of culpable homicide. Investigations are currently underway to establish the cause of the crash," said Sadike.
