Smuggling, illegal sale of drugs on the increase

The Zimbabwe Republic Police and the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (MCAZ) have noted with concern increasing cases of smuggling and illegal sell of antibiotics and other pharmaceutical drugs in the streets despite having serious health implications.
In the face of rising antimicrobial resistance in common infections driven by consumption of antibiotics, the MCAZ and the Zimbabwe Republic Police are conducting operations to curb illegal sell and uptake of antibiotics.
Police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said a regional joint operation is being conducted to curb illegal sell of pharmaceutical drugs among other crimes as syndicates are operating in cahoots.
Despite being sold at lower prices, the public needs to be educated on health implications of drugs bought from the streets as they expose them to great danger, said Mr Shingai Gwatidzo from the MCAZ.
The country's antimicrobial resistance situation analysis shows that there is a growing resistance in common infections for both human and animals.
Last month the government launched the 2017-2022 antimicrobial resistance national action plan.
