A SENIOR citizen was bashed by a 30-year-old man from Strathaven accused of gossiping and spreading rumours about the latter.
Allen Tatenda Kadera assaulted Moses Jambaya before shoving him in a fire.
Jambaya sustained burns on his left hand.
Kadera was convicted on his plea of guilty when he appeared before Harare magistrate Rumbidzai Dzumbira.
The State led by Benjamin Chikerema told the court that on September 27, Kadera confronted Jambaya over a rumour and gossip that was allegedly being circulated by Jambaya.
Jambaya professed ignorance over what Kadera was saying and before he had given further explanation, he received a thorough beating from Kadera.
Kadera further shoved Jambaya in a fire.
"Why did you assault the complainant?" asked the magistrate.
"I am sorry your worship, I was wrong. Aiita makuhwa pamusoro pangu. I plead with the court for leniency because I am the breadwinner in my family," said Kadera.
Magistrate Dzumbira ordered Kadera to pay a $100 fine or face three months in prison.
