A MAN from Kezi allegedly fatally axed his wife and fled from the scene, leaving the axe stuck in her head, following an argument over $1 airtime.

Phumani Dumani (30) of Halahala village, Sun Yet Sen, allegedly struck his wife, Musawenkosi Ncube (25), once on the head with an axe after he suspected that she was cheating on him.

Police confirmed the incident, which occurred on Wednesday at around 2AM at the couple's home.

A source said when Dumani discovered that his wife had bought $1 airtime, he questioned her about the source of the money she had used and the person she wanted to call, leading to a misunderstanding.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident and said investigations were underway.

"I can confirm that a female was found dead in her bedroom after a fight with her husband. The suspect fled from the scene and is still on the run. He murdered his wife by axing her once in the head. Family members discovered the body and investigations are underway," he said.

Insp Ndebele said the woman's body was taken to the United Bulawayo Hospitals for post mortem.

He advised members of the public to desist from resorting to violence to solve arguments.

"People should seek mediation from trusted third parties like family, friends, or church elders. They can also approach the police to reach an amicable solution rather than resort to violence," Insp Ndebele said.

He said violence torments children and tears families apart, among other far reaching social ills.

In February, a man from Gwanda allegedly killed his wife by slitting her throat before hanging himself from a tree by the roadside at a time when the couple was in the process of divorcing.

Recently, a man from Bulawayo's Cowdray Park suburb also allegedly sjamboked his wife to death after he found text messages in her phone and suspected she was having an affair.

He questioned her about a text message that he suspected was from her lover.

The suspect fled after committing the crime.
