Zimbabwe Communist Party Leader Ngqabutho Mabhena has suggested that MDC  President and MDC Alliance Spokesperson Prof Welshman Ncube take over from the ailing MDC-T President Morgan Tsvangirai in leading the Alliance.

Hereunder we publish his unedited Statement:

While am not a member of the MDC Alliance and l have no right to decide on who should be its Presidential candidate, history tells us that, while the late O. R Tambo was not well in 1991, the ANC elected him to a non demanding position of National Chairman.

Am still trying to understand the political strategy advanced by Prof Welshman Ncube in insisting on fielding Dr Tsvangirai as a Presidential candidate for 2018. While Prof Ncube raises a valid argument on the experience of Dr Tsvangirai, but the failure to groom another leader, including Prof Ncube himself by Dr Tsvangirai is worrying.

It is in our African culture to show sympathy to a person not well inside and outside politics. As Africans, we get worried when those who seek political office use a person in Dr Tsvangirai's condition to achieve their political ambitions.

As an African, I call on the MDC Alliance to allow Dr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai to concentrate on his health away from the demanding political life. If indeed the MDC Alliance is institutional, not based on individuals, Prof Ncube, with his vast experience as the founding Secretary General of the MDC and one of the two remaining members of the MDC Top 6 (outside Tsvangirai), the other being Hon Gift Chimanikire, he should take over from Dr Tsvangirai.
