Harare council demolish Matapi flats

Harare City Council is set to demolish Matapi Flats in Mbare due to healthy reasons.
City spokesperson Michael Chideme said Harare will partner with CBZ to build new flats in the area
"We are soon going to sign an agreement with CBZ. The agreement is such that we will progressively demolish apartments after constructing new apartments where we will transfer people," he said.
"The existing apartment is not structurally viable, we will bring it down and build a new one.
"When development comes to Mbare, residents should embrace the development. If they do not, we will have this problem every year," said Chideme.
He said the land for new apartments was available near the current flats.
Addressing a press conference yesterday to give an update on the typhoid outbreak, Health Services director Dr Prosper Chonzi said the city was winning as numbers of people coming through treatment camps at Matapi Hostels were decreasing.
"Instead of the initial 160 patients that were coming for screening on a daily basis the numbers have reduced to 50 to 60 per day," he said.
He said typhoid patients normally suffer from headaches, general body weakness, abdominal discomfort with or without diarrhoea and fever.
"To date our line list is on 301.The ones that are confirmed to be having typhoid are over 30.We have not had any confirmed death from typhoid. In an outbreak situation we carry out in investigations and analysis to verify the cause of deaths," he said.
"As l speak, we have only three patients admitted at Beatrice Road Infectious hospital where we admit our sick patients. As of yesterday, they were five and after the wards rounds they are now three. We hope by end of day today, we will reduce them to none. This means that people are heeding to our calls on safe hygienic practices."
He said some of the good hygienic practices include washing of hands before consuming any food and after using the ablution facilities, desisting from buying food from unlicensed premises, where the quality and safety of food is not guaranteed, boil or treat water before using it for domestic purposes, use water on boreholes.
