AN illegal foreign currency dealer based in Beitbridge escaped death by a whisker at the weekend after he was shot by suspected robbers, who later got away with cash amounting to R10 000.

Another Beitbridge money changer was on Saturday night shot in yet another robbery, where gunmen waylaid him as he arrived home at the end of the day's business.

Mvurachena Tadzembwa is recuperating at Beitbridge Hospital after he was hit on the foot and hand, as he parked his vehicle after a day's work on Saturday.

Matabeleland South police spokesperson Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident, but said he did not have enough details.

Tadzembwa said about five men confronted him as he got out of his car and demanded money.

When he attempted to flee, he was hit on the leg and he threw the money to his assailants before crouching in front of his car screaming for help from people inside his house.

"They must have been scared by the gun because even the dogs went quiet when the gun was fired," Tadzembwa said yesterday.

After picking the money the robbers quickly disappeared into the night and Tadzembwa was later rushed to hospital.

Tadzembwa becomes the fifth local money-changer to fall victim to armed robbers in as many weeks.
