POLICE in Juru have arrested a 34-year-old man who allegedly strangled his seven-year-old daughter before dumping the juvenile's body in a farm pond to evade paying maintenance.

Charles Kavhumbura of Susman Farm in Juru is currently assisting police with investigations after he allegedly confessed to killing his daughter, Rufaro.

Efforts to get a comment from police in Mashonaland East province were fruitless yesterday.

According to a reliable source, on October 14, the accused's ex-wife Pedzisai Kachepa (32) left the now deceased in the company of her 10-year-old brother, as she proceeded to the nearby Umristur Primary School.

It is reported that upon returning home, Pedzisai failed to locate her daughter despite a massive search for her before making a missing person report at Chabwino Police Post.

The deceased's body was found floating in a pond two days later by two pupils, who had visited the pond to fetch water.

The pupils alerted one Never Chako, who then filed a report at Juru Police Station.

It is reported that when police came to retrieve the body, the accused was in the crowd and positively identified the body as that of her daughter. A post-mortem held on October 24 at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals by Roberto Betancout showed that the girl died of head and neck trauma.

Police officers received a tip off that Kavhumbura was behind the alleged murder. On being quizzed, the accused allegedly confessed that he had strangled his daughter in a bid to evade a maintenance order claim made by his ex-wife.
