I wish to congratulate the people of Zambia and the Zambia national team for winning the 2012 edition of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Indeed, Zambia's victory in Libreville last night was an emotional moment not only for the country and its people, but also for those of us in Zimbabwe who share a painful history with our northern neighbours.

The victory yesterday capped a fine campaign by the brave Chipolopolo boys and that golden cup must deservedly be dedicated to that fine crop of players who perished off the coast of Gabon in that tragic plane crash in 1993.

For over two hours, I sat glued to my television set and eventually jumped with joy, as I am sure every Zimbabwean did, after the decisive spot-kick capped Zambia's finest moment in football history.

On behalf of the Government and the people of Zimbabwe, I wish to express my solidarity and support for the people of Zambia in their happiest hour.

Indeed, the boys played well and exhibited the true Zambian spirit of resilience and team work.

To the people of Zambia I say, we are with you in this fine hour.

We are happy for you and today, we rejoice with all the Zambian people and the gallant players who have made an indelible mark and earned you, our neighbours, a revered place in Africa's football history.

May God bless you all!

Morgan R. Tsvangirai
Prime Minister of the Republic of Zimbabwe
