Govt blocks $9 million diamonds sale
08 Nov 2017 at 05:49hrs | Views
Government has blocked Murowa Diamonds - owned by RioZim - from selling diamonds worth over $9 million in Antwerp, Belgium. Murowa has since filed an urgent chamber application before the High Court in which it cited Mines minister Walter Chidhakwa and the Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (MMCZ) as respondents.
The firm is seeking permission to sell its diamonds in Antwerp on November 16.
According to the company's commercial manager Edward Mazorodze, Zimbabwe has not yet promulgated any principal or subsidiary legislation that prescribes the procedural requirements for seeking a certificate.
He further said there was no reason for delaying or withholding the issuance of certificate, as the consignment does not contain conflict diamonds.
