HUNDRENDS of pupils escaped death by a whisker after a whirlwind blew a roof off a classroom block at Phumuza Primary School in Bulilima on Monday afternoon. The strong winds destroyed property worth $5 000.

Documents belonging to the registrar of births and deaths whose team was housed at the school were also reportedly destroyed.

The team was part of the national outreach programme to issue births and national identification cards which was rolled out by the Government two months ago.

Bulilima Rural Distinct Council chief executive officer, Mr John Brown Ncube, whose council superintends over the school, yesterday confirmed the mishap.

"The issue is Phumuza Primary School has been hit by strong winds, a sort of whirlwind. The only 1 x 2 standard classroom block's roof was blown away by the wind on Monday during lunch hour," said Mr Ncube.

He said there were no casualties.
