A goods train derailed in Mutare this afternoon amid indications that it failed to negotiate a curve.

Eyewitnesses say the train derailment which occurred around 2pm today in the area between Chikanga Phase 2 and Sakubva Devonshire was due to failure to negotiate a curve.

The goods train was travelling from Mutare to Harare, carrying an assortment of cargo in 12 loaded containers with seven of the wagons going off the rails.

National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) spokesperson, Mr Nyasha Maravanyika said preliminary investigations show the derailment was caused by failure to negotiate a curve.

He said the derailment occurred on the main line linking Mutare to Harare and repair works are expected to be completed this Friday.

Mr Maravanyika said about 250 meters of rail have been damaged.

Despite the apparent danger, many of those at the scene of the derailment could be seen scavenging for wheat under the train as well as on the sides of the railway track.

For others it was a chance to take selfies as well as to have a look at what the rest of the train's cargo was.
