Daily News sued for defamation

COPAC co-Chairperson, Munyaradzi Paul Mangwana has instructed his lawyers to sue a local newspaper, The Daily News, for defamation.
Mangwana alleges that the Daily News defamed him in an article published on the 15th of February which claimed that he was set to be grilled over allegations of trying to oust President Robert Mugabe.
The Daily News, which is a publication of the Associated Newspapers of Zimbabwe, is being sued for US$1 million.
In an interview Mangwana's lawyer, Advocate Aston Musunga said they have since notified the Daily News Editor in writing that legal action is being taken against his paper.
Mr Musunga said the Daily News article has the effect of waning Mangwana's popularity amongst his peers thereby extensively damaging his political carrier and standing in society.
The letter also says the alleged clause imposing limitations on the presidential terms never came from the outreach programme nor was it inserted by COPAC but was inserted by the drafters on their own initiative.
It also dismissed the claim that Mangwana was summoned by the President.
