Zapu party has said its leader Dumiso Dabengwa in his plans to retire from active politics and handing over the position of leading the Coalition of Democrats to the Elton Mangoma were rare with most political leaders in the country who are not ready to live power.
Party deputy spokesperson Iphithule Maphosa said this rare move by President Dabengwa casts insult to the commonly infamous reference of youth as leaders of tomorrow.
"Instead, his is the belief that young people are leaders of today, hence his confidence in passing the baton and take the well deserved rest, knowing the revolution continues in safe hands. His announcement of retirement five years before time gives ZAPU the opportunity and ample time to carefully select a suitable candidate for his replacement, ensuring and guaranteeing a smooth succession process within the party. Another first of its kind in Zimbabwe.
It's not only ZAPU that has benefited from President Dabengwa's rare leadership qualities," he said.
"After qualifying for presidential candidature for the oldest coalition in the country, the Coalition of Democrats (CODE), President Dabengwa voluntarily gave way to RDZ President Elton Mangoma, arguing he would rather give a younger leader to front the coalition. Fortunately, as the adage goes that young people are leaders of today, Mangoma was equally prepared for the task"
He said because of the kind of leadership being demonstrated by President Dabengwa, both in ZAPU and CODE, the oldest coalition is distinctively different from the other coalitions currently in existence.
"What makes CODE different from the other two is that ours do not subscribe to one centre of power philosophy, which has led to the "chete chete" mantra as obtains in the ruling party and in some opposition quarters. The one centre of power phenomenon has had adverse effect on lives of Zimbabweans. We have mass graves dotted around the country because of it. We have leads who are prepared to go to the grave in positions and with their parties. We witness vague to no succession plans in a number of political parties," he said.
"The opposition in Zimbabwe was rendered ineffective because of one centre of power idea. Ambition for top leadership has suddenly become tantamount to treason and those aspiring for leadership are routinely labelled as disloyal, deceitful, fanning factionalism and undermining the incumbent. Ambition has now been criminalizes and according to Mugabe and ZANU PF, ambition attracts death penalty or life imprisonment. No wonder why Mugabe want reinstatement of the death sentence, he wants to eliminate all those with ambition for office higher than the Vice President in ZANU PF and government. Hence Mnangagwa, after his expulsion had to escape for dear life."
He said right now, there is fear and dispondency in the country simply because of one centre of power.
"Already in motion from CODE is the solution to this menacing problem of a single and central point of power. The Supreme Council as espoused in the CODE structure. This diffuses the one centre of power by making them two, with the President answerable to it. It takes away powers from an individual and spreads them in a structure, giving horizontal responsibility and power to coalition partners," he said.
"Zapu, as a member of CODE are convicted this is the best governance model our country needs right now. As such we urge other alliances to adopt this fair model of collective leadership."
