Mugabe impeachment proceedings are set for 12.15 noon

Robert Mugabe has been under house arrest since last Wednesday, following a military takeover. Since then, the situation has been tense and uncertain. There were several reports of the long-serving leader refusing to stand down. On Sunday night, the country - and the world - witnessed it first hand.

In a long, rambling speech, Mugabe did everything but quit. The ruling Zanu-PF booted him out as party leader on Sunday and expelled his wife Grace Mugabe. The deadline to resign came and went and now impeachment beckons.

09:30 Reuters reports ousted Zimbabwean vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa  added his voice to the chorus of calls for Mugabe to step down.

"I told the President that I would not return home now until I am satisfied of my personal security, because of the manner and treatment given to me upon being fired," he said in a statement.

08:57 Mugabe called a cabinet meeting for this morning last night, despite having been sacked as party leader. Students are marching demanding he resigns as president of the country. Thousands of students refused to write exams on Monday.
