Mugabe's rule was maintained by securocrats even after his defeat by MDC-T in 2008

MDC led by Welshman Ncube has said it is not true that the opposition failed to remove former President Robert Mugabe from power but the truth was that MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai defeated him in 2008 but the armed forces made sure that he remain in power.
"Did the opposition fail to remove Mugabe from power? It is a false assumption that the opposition failed to remove Mugabe on three grounds: The opposition 'removed Mugabe in 2008 when Morgan Tsvangirai won the election'. We must never forget that. The people removed Mugabe led by the opposition in 2008. The securocrats, Zanu PF thugs and the electoral commission conspired to announce a false result and to construct an election which was for all purposes a fake election. So the responsibility for failure to remove Mugabe cannot be placed on the claws of the opposition, it's far from it," said the MDC.
"Yes, today the military has - and that is all it has done - withdrawn its support for Mugabe. They did not remove him because in reality they failed to do so. They allowed the people to go to the streets and regain their freedom so that the people can reassert the authority they asserted in 2008 for Mugabe to go. It is the actions of the people that provided the final push to bring to an end Mugabe's rule. All that the army has done is to remove its protection of the dictatorship. The people went to the streets and spoke unequivocally."
MDC said Mugabe is this weak and exposed today, literally an emperor without clothes, because the opposition has been chipping away at the edifice of his rule, slowly one blow after another.
"The opposition, the civil society and the independent media collectively. Everybody had their turn of striking at the dictatorship until the emperor was without clothe, enabling the military to say we can withdraw our protection and receive massive popular support for withdrawing that protection. So the opposition has been successful with all of those little blows over the years, in exposing Mugabe as unfit and incompetent and therefore as being able to be removed," said MDC.
