PRESIDENT Robert Mugabe has revealed that his son, Robert Junior often fooled him into believing that he was doing well at school but was shocked when the boy got a chain of six Us.

Mugabe, who turn 88 on Tuesday told Sunday Mail that his son "became an undertaker!'

"He is in the national (basketball) team. He did not do well in his A-Level exams. We have now had to get him private teachers. He enjoys this basketball thing. He likes it, he goes to the gym after that, but aahh . . . we were given the impression he was working hard.

Continued Mugabe, " How are you doing?, we would ask him and yes, the papers were not hard, he would say. We expected he would get through, but no, he became an undertaker! 'U's! That is why they call them undertakers!" said Mugabe who has a chain of degrees with a majority being honorary.

Mugabe said his daughter Bona currently in the country wants to be a chartered accountant would "want to get married in a year or two"

"The girl (Bona) was not like that. We are with her for now. She wants to be a chartered accountant. We are very happy for her . . . She is now 23. She will want to get married in a year or two, perhaps. They don't wait. They want to get married soon. She is a home girl though, not as outgoing as her brother" said Mugabe.

In 2009, Mugabe's last born son, Chatunga Bellarmine Mugabe also failed his 2009 Grade 7 examination.

Chatunga managed to score 14 points at Hartmann House School.

Observers have likened the boy's dismal academic performances to their mother, Grace.

Also in 2009 , it was widely reported that his wife, Grace dropped out of a university in London where she was studying for a Bachelor of Arts (English) degree after dismally failing most of her examinations.

Reports said Grace whose personal tutor was Mugabe, had passed only two subjects since she enrolled at the University of London. She was studying through correspondence.

Her lack of progress prompted the university officials to deregister her from the programme, the report said.
