Community benefits from the Gwayi Shangani project have become questionable with the project said to have employees from other regions at the expense of the local community.
The first stage of the construction of the Gwayi Shangani Dam is expected to benefit the community through access to water for agricultural purposes, fisheries as well as employment opportunities.
However, there have been concerns that the community is being sacrificed as the authorities are engaging labour from other areas.
Chairperson of the Zambezi Water Project, Mr Donald Khumalo said while the involvement of the community is clear, it has not been implemented and preference has been given to people from other provinces even for jobs which do not require specialised skills.
"The last time we were there was quite some noise on that because people had come from elsewhere to provide labour but our discussion was to ensure locals are incorporated in as much as possible where they can provide labour. We even have lots of technocrats in Matabeleland North Province but they are always by-passed by these programmes," he said.
The dam will have a capacity of 635 million cubic metres of water after its completion.
Its final cost will however be determined by the results of the feasibility study which is being carried out.
