A 41-year-old man who was reportedly mistaken for a command fertilizer thief was struck with an axe on his left leg on Monday morning (today) in Centenary, Bulawayo24.com has learnt.
Speaking to Bulawayo24.com from Mvurwi hospital Jack Garufu said he passed through a place in Chipiri farm were eleven bags of command fertilizer had been stolen and was mistaken for a thief together with another suspect who was part of the syndicate that allegedly stole the fertilizer where they were thoroughly beaten.
"I was caught in the cross fire in Chipiri where three suspected thieves had stolen eleven bags of fertilizer.
"There were settlers who were arm bushing for thieves and had caught one in the process ,so I passed through around 3:00hours and they took me for a thief," Garufu narrated.
"They demanded my national identity card at first I did not comply and they started assaulting me with open hands.
"Sensing danger I gave them my wallet and my identity card the suspect was asked if we were together in their shenanigans, but he told them I was not part of them.
"We were ordered to board a car upon boarding I was cut with an axe by the cheecky settlers and I bled profoundly resulting in me being sent here by the police after they found out that I was innocent." Apparently the thieves were all from Mvurwi and all the bags they reportedly stole were recovered at a local garage and the suspects are currently assisting police with investigations at Centenary police station.
