Bulawayo City Councillors have expressed concerns about the dirty state of Egodini terminus.

According to latest council minutes, discussion ensued and Councillor Charles Moyo observed that Egodini Commuter terminus was very dirty.

A video clip was played recently on the national TV showing an unclean environment at Egodini. Ward 1 had only 5 members of the sweeping group while other Wards had 15 members each. There was need to increase the number of
members in Ward 1.

Councillor Tholani Ngwenya felt that even 5 members of the Community sweeping group could clean the area.

There was a need for effective supervision.

The Chairperson L. Mlilo observed that in her Ward 12 a refuse removal contractor had subcontracted someone after his truck broke down.

"This was done without informing Council. The resident who was subcontracted up to now had not been paid. In response, the Director of Health Services explained that Council had manpower challenges. The actual establishment of cleansing staff in the city centre was 88. Currently, there were only 13 sweepers. Egodini Commuter Omnibus area was being cleaned by the community group. The dirtiest area was a long trench which would be cleared soon. It was. recommended having skip bins at Egodini. Refuse removal contractors had formed an association," reads the minutes.

"The matter would be reported to the association. The Chamber Secretary also explained that Egodini Commuter Omnibus terminus was a very busy area. A recommendation had been made for skip bins. The challenge was the special truck and skip bins had been budgeted for but had no funding. On the issue of the numbers of Ward 1 community sweeping group a review would be done accordingly."

The minutes state that council would also come up with a new method of managing and supervising these groups.

"An investigation would be done regarding the contractor in Ward 12 and appropriate measures would be taken," reads the minutes.
