A SUPERVISOR at Hupenyu Hutsva Children's Home will spend 23 years in jail for raping and impregnating three orphaned girls at the institution.
Morgan Urayayi (35) of Highfield threatened to send the girls away from the orphanage if they disclosed the abuse.
Harare regional magistrate, Ms Esthere Chivasa sentenced Urayayi to 28 years before suspending five years on condition of good behaviour.
"Rape is a very serious offence which warrants a lengthy custodial sentence. In this case, the children were exposed to sexually transmitted diseases and it is sad that all the girls are now pregnant with a rapist who is going to prison. I am sure that the accused person looked for a job at the institution just to molest the girls who looked up to him as their guardian. He abused the poor girls and it is disheartening to note that one of them is mentally challenged. The accused deserves a stiffer penalty."
In aggravation, prosecutor Ms Sarah Bosha, had called for a stiffer penalty arguing that Urayayi was a menace to society.
The court heard that between January and September last year, Urayayi raped the girls aged between 15 and 16 years.
He approached a 16-year-old girl at the institution and proposed love to her. The girl turned him down but he insisted every time they met, prompting the girl to finally give in.
Urayayi continued abusing the girl until September, when the girl disclosed the information to a friend. The court heard that Urayayi also raped another 15-year-old girl after they had gone for camping at Chishawasha. In May, Urayayi raped a mentally challenged 15-year-old girl at his house.
All the offences came to light after the girls disclosed the abuse to Susan Ganhi who also works at the institution. A police report was made leading to Urayayi's arrest.
