Cops, soldiers arrested over $5 bribe at roadblock

Nineteen members of the uniformed force manning roadblock duties at 60km peg along Birchenough Bridge-Mount Selinda road were arrest on Saturday (yesterday) for allegedly soliciting for a five dollar bribe from a motorist.
According to a leaked Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) memorandum directed to Officer Commanding Police Manicaland Province, nine Zimbabwe Republic Police members and 10 members of the Zimbabwe National Army are currently assisting police with investigations over criminal abuse of duty as public officials.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers are Noel Marima (34), Tinashe Leornard Chigodho (34), Mercy Jumburu (33), Donga Trust (32), George Dliwayo (29), Clemance Manuere (23), Moreblessing Sibanda (30), Peter Tevera (32) and Brighton Benhura (34).
While, members of the military are, Donald Fungai Musapatike (34), Richard Tauya (24), Proud Madzivanyika (28), Collen Tawanda (26),Johanne Chindova(28), Edward Tapiwa Bonde (31) Tichaona Chimonera (34), Briefin Zimunya (29) and Remember Masuku (26).
The memorandum reads, "On 9 December 2017 the accused persons were on roadblock duties at 60 km peg along Birchenough Bridge - Mount Selinda Road, Chipinge, Acting in common purpose, they hatched a plan to solicit for bribes from passing motorists.
"During the tour of their duty, the team is alleged to have solicited for a five dollar ($5) bribe from the complaint who was a passenger in a Public Service Vehicle, Commuter Omnibus that was coming from Chipinge Town en-route to Mutare.
"This did not go down well with the complainant, who reported the corruption activities by the accused persons.
"On the same day, the accused persons were arrested and are assisting with investigations. The accused persons were interviewed and denied having received a bribe from the complainant.
"The bribe money was not recovered.
