Three people died and 19 others were seriously injured yesterday when a commuter omnibus and a Toyota Gaia collided head on along Gweru-Shurugwi road.
The Shurugwi bound Gaia had two passengers, who died on the spot, while the commuter omnibus was carrying 20 people.
In a telephone interview with ZBC Gweru Medical Superintendent, Doctor Fabian Mashingaidze confirmed that 12 injured passengers were admitted at Gweru Hospital, while five others with minor injuries were taken to Shurugwi Hospital.
The injured are said to be still in hospital where they are responding to medication and recuperating well.
Two eyewitnesses reported seeing the commuter omnibus trying to overtake ahead of an oncoming Toyota Gaia and the driver of the Gaia swerved to the left and veered off the road trying to avoid a head on collision, while the driver of the commuter omnibus is said to have lost control of the vehicle and swerved in the direction of the Gaia resulting in the head on collision that left three people dead.
Efforts to get a comment from the police were fruitless.
