A BUDIRIRO woman left the court in stitches when she revealed that she consumed rat killer to save her unstable marriage.

Rangarirai Mhodyo told the court that her husband Caston Mushayi remained adamant to divorce and drinking poison was the only way to save her marriage as that would force him to reconsider her.

Mhodyo approached Harare Civil Court seeking for a peace order against her husband whom she says he abuses and threatens her with divorce.

"Your Worship, I am applying for a peace order against my husband, he insults me with obscenities and he assaults me too.

"He even threatens to divorce me so that is the reason why I drank poison because I wanted to scare him.

"I knew I was not going to die because the poison was about to expire. I only fell sick and I was hospitalised," said Mhodyo.

She added that she could no longer bear to see everything in her marriage falling apart.

"I can't afford to lose my marriage just like that so I had no choice than to take poison hoping that he will go back to senses, but all my efforts were in vain.

In response Mushayi denied ever abusing his wife.

"Your Worship I am opposed to application, I never abused her but I only advised her about our divorce.

"She deserves a divorce because she is no longer doing her duties as a wife .All she can do is gossip.

"She even worsened the situation by consuming a rat killer, how can I stay with a woman who always thinks of killing herself," he said.

Presiding magistrate Lazini Ncube dismissed the application and advised them to solve disputes amicably.
