A major water crisis beckons for Zimbabwe's local authorities amid revelations that the country is only left with just a week's supply of water purification chemicals.
Information indicates that AI Davies (Private) Limited, the sole supplier of bulk water treatment chemicals to the Zimbabwe National Water Authority and most municipality, has not been able to restock due to foreign currency shortages. The bulk of the chemicals are imported.
The situation has compounded fears of an outbreak of deadly water-borne diseases particularly cholera, which can wipe out whole communities if exposed to unsafe water sources.
Sources at ZINWA said AI Davies wrote to ZIMWA, its main client, on Monday, warning that due to foreign currency shortages, they were left with a week's supply of chemicals.
