A Bulawayo City councillor Collet Ndhlovu of the MDC-T allegedly teamed up with his wife to assault his ex-wife.
Ndhlovu (55) who is a councillor for Cowdray Park suburb, allegedly slapped his ex-wife Ms Linda Mabvute several times on the face on Tuesday last week while at his sports bar in Cowdray Park.
The court heard that Ndhlovu lost his temper when Ms Mabvute asked him for money for the upkeep of the couple's two children.
His wife who is not named in court papers allegedly hurled insults at Ms Mabvute before Ndhlovu beat her up.
Ms Mabvute ran away but Ndlovu sent a group of men to chase after her. They allegedly dragged her back to the bar where the councillor continued assaulting her.
Ndhlovu yesterday appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Stephen Ndhlovu facing assault charges.
He pleaded not guilty and was remanded out of custody to Monday for trial.
Prosecuting, Mr Mufaro Mageza told the court that on Tuesday last week Ms Mabvute approached Ndhlovu while he was at Mahwenda Sports Bar and asked for money for the children.
"While they were talking Ndhlovu's wife came and started to insult Ms Mabvute. Ndhlovu then joined his wife in insulting the complainant and then pushed her and she fell down and he slapped her several times on the face."
In a police statement Ms Mabvute said Ndhlovu even sent some men to chase after her after she had escaped.
"I managed to escape and he asked some men to chase me and he assaulted me further," she said
