The Meteorological Services Department says heavy rains that have started pounding across the country are expected to continue to Wednesday 27 December 2017.

In a statement to ZBC News, the met department has implored the public and the nation to be more vigilant and prepared, particularly for rescue operations if the need arises.

The department expressed concern over reports of drowning, despite numerous warnings being issued.

"Let us all collectively take these alerts seriously," read the statement.

The met department explained that the present rainy situation is a combination of the presence of a deep low pressure system centred over the country and a frontal cloud system which entered the country through Matabeleland provinces, adding that the current heating around midday further enhances rainfall activity.

The statement says from Monday 25 to Wednesday 27 December 2017, generally rainfall in excess of 50mm in 24 hours is expected over the high ground areas along the central watershed as well as the Eastern Highlands.

The department applauded the excellent partnership that is currently obtaining with the media fraternity, saying warnings are a collective effort.
