A 26 year old woman in Chitungwiza has been arrested for burning her seven-year-old cousin's hand on a red-hot electric stove as punishment for stealing $10. The boy sustained serious injuries.
Hilma Chireka has since admitted the charge. Last week, she appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Godfrey Unzemoyo, who set judgment for this Tuesday.
She told the court that she wanted to stop the boy from becoming a habitual thief. "Your Worship, I thought I was punishing him since this was not the first time he had stolen from me. He once took my cell phone and gave it to the man next door and this time, again, he stole the money and gave it to the same person," Hilma said.
Appearing for the State, Mr Henry Muringwa said the incident occurred on the evening of 13 February. Chireka, her husband and the seven-year-old were relaxing at home. She quizzed him over the $10 that had gone missing earlier that day. She and her husband, thereafter assaulted the minor who subsequently admitted giving the money to a neighbour, one Eriya Mungate.
It is understood Mungate gave him sweets in return. Chireka switched on the stove and pressed the boy's palm against a hot plate, leaving him with severe burns.
