Hundreds of city workers and shoppers in Mutare were on Saturday left stranded after police and soldiers forced businesses to close while passengers using public transport were forced to attend Zanu-PF's Robert Mugabe's 88th birthday at Sakubva Stadium.

Zanu-PF hooligans manning bus stops in surrounding suburbs instructed kombi drivers to ferry people to the stadium for free.

Residents of Chikanga, Dangamvura, Hob-House, Weimouth, Zimunya, Fernvalley who wanted to go to work or for shopping were surprised when they discovered that they were all being dropped at one bus-stop - Sakubva Stadium and forced to enter into the arena by soldiers, police officers and Zanu-PF youths manning the gates.

Most businesses including shops were forced to close.

Primary and secondary school students were not spared either as each school led by its school head and each class led by its class teacher were instructed to attend the bash.
