Movement for Democratic Change president, Tsvangirai, yesterday described the late Chief Makumbe, Mr Chakanyuka Marenga, as a peace - loving man when he paid his last respects at the Makumbe Homestead in Buhera West.
Government officials joined Tsvangirai, traditional leaders, politicians and the local community at the burial of Chief Makumbe at Marenga village.
Chief Makumbe, who reigned in the area since 1986, died on Sunday in Harare at BS Leon Hospital where he was admitted after succumbing to liver cancer at the age of 92. He is survived by two wives, 13 children, over 39 grandchildren and several great-grand children.
Tsvangirai described the late Chief Makumbe as a man of the people, a straight forward and exemplary leader and added that the matter of peace is not to be left for politicians alone.
"The matter of peace is not to be left to politicians alone. It is for all of us. We all have a part to play," he said.
He said, the three principles in the Inclusive Government agreed that there should be no politically motivated violence in the country and urged the people of Buhera to play their part by maintaining peace. President Tsvangirai encouraged everyone to ensure stability, peace and unity in their areas to foster development.
"Development can only be there when there is stability," he said. "We can all belong to different parties but we have one national interest, to make sure that everyone has food on their table, and everyone is able to afford a better life for their families. A true leader is not selective," he said.
Speaking at the same occasion, Eric Matinenga, who is the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Buhera West Member of Parliament, described the late Chief Makumbe as a peace loving leader.
He said Chief Makumbe often called him and shared with him his wish for this nation to be peaceful.
