Twenty-nine MDC-T members accused of murdering a police officer, Petros Mutedza last year were yesterday taken back into custody after being indicted for trial which is set to commence at the High Court on 12 March 2011.
Lawyers representing the MDC members had to wait for the better part of the day before the State finally convened proceedings. This conduct by the State has been described by the lawyers as "shocking, unethical and unprofessional."
Only a fortnight ago, seven of the accused were granted bail by Deputy Chief Justice Luke Malaba. Those granted bail by Justice Malaba are Rebecca Mafikeni, Phenias Nhatarikwa, Stanford Maengahama, Lazarus Maengahama, Yvonne Musarurwa, Stanford Mangwiro and Glen View Ward 32 councellor, Tungamirai Madzokere.
During their initial remand, the MDC-T supporters are alleged to have been brutally assaulted by the police and prison guards. It is also alleged that the two accused women, Rebecca Mafikeni and Yvonne Musarurwa endured incarceration in the male section of Chikurubi Remand Prison where they were ill-treated to the extent of cleaning raw sewage flowing through their cell using bare hands.
